Excellence/Benoit III at La Mala Sombra confirmed
Jul. 16, 2006

Just a little over a half-hour ago (12:02 a.m. ET), the PWF Booking Committee -- headed up by new commissioner Jim Ross -- closed the deal on finally getting Excellence and Chris Benoit, two former SCW World Champions, in the ring to go one-on-one at La Mala Sombra.

This match is more than just a high-profile contest between two established superstars. There won't be a World Championship on-the-line for the La Mala Sombra bout like there was for each of their two prior contests. This match is about more than championships. For Excellence and Chris Benoit, it's personal.

This past week on Wargames, The Crippler made reference to the suspension he suffered in VCW by Excellence, who, of course, ran the promotion. Benoit insinuated that it was done to prevent him from getting the match with Excellence that he's wanted since 2000. The Wolverine has shown up in the PWF numerous times before officially signing a deal a couple of weeks ago, and it seemed as if every appearance involved -- in one way or another -- Excellence. During Benoit's short-lived stint in VCW, getting his hands on the Franchise Player was all he cared about. He is about to -- finally -- get his opportunity.

For Excellence, Chris Benoit has done everything he can to be a thorn in his side, and you better believe the four-time World Champion would love nothing more than to get rid of The Crippler once and for all. He has gone on record as viewing Benoit as a "black mark" on the legacy of the Perfect Team, accusing him of not leading the PT properly and failing to take Chris Jericho and then-member Booker T to more prominent positions in the SCW years ago. This match might finally be his chance to silence The Crippler.

Chris Benoit has made it perfectly clear that he blames Excellence for what happened on June 26, 2000 -- the day Benoit agreed to defend his SCW World title against him and the day Excellence stabbed him in the back after winning it from him. Excellence feels justified in what happened, almost as if he were removing a "cancer" from the Perfect Team. Benoit disappeared, only to come back a few weeks later to get back what he lost ... and more. In August of 2000, the two had another match -- another classic. It even looked like the war between them was going to reach a whole new level with the creation of Benoit's "Real Deal" after the contest, teaming him with former Perfect Team members Fire & Ice -- Booker T and Dean Malenko -- to make the battle with the Perfect Team more even. Fans would get to see nothing come out of this, however, as Supreme Championship Wrestling closed its doors soon afterwards.

This was all in the year 2000. Six years is a long time to wait, and time has done nothing to heal Chris Benoit's wounds. This match with Excellence may be what heals The Wolverine.

"Bad blood" is not even an accurate way to describe what these two men have between each other. In 2000, Chris Benoit felt like he was betrayed, and sought a redemption that was killed by SCW closing down ... for good. In 2005, Excellence denied Benoit the chance for a match by suspending him from VCW. On Aug. 2, 2006 ... it will finally happen.

La Mala Sombra.
