THE TOP 10 RAVEN MOMENTS
***by Ted Butterknife, May 14, 2008***

To narrow down this list to 10 would be to forget some of the greatest events in the history of professional wrestling. Ever since his debut in the summer of 1997, Raven has always been at the center of not only controversy but the top of whichever company he chose to wrestle for. These 10 moments are to be a look back at the career of the Raven, one that has been both scorned and adored, hated and coveted ... a look at the violence that was and the violence that, most assuredly, will be.

10 Raven's NOWF in-ring debut
No man has ever had a World title shot in his first match. Except for Raven. Having just turned his back on Taz -- for the first of many times -- the Raven was granted a shot at Greg "The Master" Mills and his NOWF World Championship. The match would not go the way of the Raven due to interference by Taz, but it was the first look of times to come, with the Raven at the top of the wrestling industry.

9 Raven's PWF debut
Depressed by VCW's bleak roster, Raven concocted a scheme in which he would not only hurt Excellence's ego but also his dreams. The owner of VCW was told by the Raven that he would not follow Taz to the PWF, but the Raven had other plans and, once he was granted a shot at the VCW World Heavyweight Championship, he drove the final nail in VCW's coffin, effectively killing the organization, by showing up at the PWF's King of the Ring and denouncing Excellence from the cozy confines of Eric Bischoff's company.

8 Raven defeats Steve Augustine for the NOWF World Championship
His first NOWF World Championship was muddied by controversy, but on Jan. 21, 2001, Raven defeated one of his greatest rivals in Steve Augustine, putting an end to his Three Years Feud with Augustine and finally gaining the respect of the NOWF audience.

7 Raven puts James Ace through Twenty Tables
James Ace thought he was returning to defeat The Undefeatable Chris Jericho. Raven had other ideas. The week after Ace's return at Fall Battle Fields, the Raven confronted Ace and stated that Ace would never be welcome in "HIS" locker room for all that he did to the Raven in the SCW all those years ago. Ace tried to dismiss the Raven but was unable to and was assigned a Street Fight with him at WrestleFest II. The match between the two reached epic proportions as the Raven, as he planned to do, Even Flow'd Ace through Twenty Tables off the top of some scaffolding inside of Ford Field in Detroit. As Ace writhed in pain, the Raven found a way to drape his arm over the destroyed Ace and pinned him for his biggest win to-date in the PWF.

6 The Year of the Raven
The year 2007 was the greatest year in the already storied career of Raven. He not only won the PWF Championship three times, but he also won the annual Battle Field and defeated nearly the entire PWF roster at one point or another. Before 2007 began, the Raven claimed that 2007 would be "The Year of the Raven," a statement that his opponents took exception to, but time and time again, those opponents would fail to make the Raven eat his words. He was only pinned twice in The Year of the Raven, but each time following a loss, it would be months before he would be pinned again. In the end, 2007 was, indeed, The Year of the Raven.

5 The SCW goes on hiatus, August 1999
Raven was scheduled to receive a shot at the SCW World Championship in September of 1999 against the leader of the Perfect Team, Mr. Perfect. What happened next is still a mystery, a mystery that only James Ace, the SCW owner, could ever answer. If you ask Ace, due to unforeseen circumstances, the SCW would have to go on hiatus immediately, canceling all matches, house shows, television tapings, and pay-per-views, at which the Raven's match was to have been held. If you ask the Raven, Ace shut down the SCW so Raven wouldn't become the SCW World Champion; he was, after all, in his opinion, clearly more focused than Mr. Perfect heading into the match. Whatever happened, we may never know, but what we do know is that the Raven used this incident to fuel his hatred for James Ace and the SCW, a hatred that knew no bounds.

4 Raven defeats James Ace for the PWF Championship
Until this match, Raven's PWF career was marred by failures at the most important of times. He lost three PWF title matches against Mr. Perfect inside the span of four months and hadn't been able to live down those failures. James Ace, his old SCW rival, tried to use this to his advantage, but it was to no avail as the Raven finally overcame the monkey on his back and defeated Ace, as well as John Cena, inside of the Doomsday Cage on July 4, 2007.

3 "The Suicide"
Where does one begin? Still upset over not having his SCW World title match, still upset at James Ace, still angry at the world, still angry at the supposed Monopoly, Raven decided to take matters into his own hands. In an attempt to gain notice from the SCW owner, the Raven took to the SCW airwaves, appearing to have Ace's cousin, Sean Gunn, held captive, a gun to his head. Although proven to be untrue, Ace could not take the Raven's self-serving nature any longer and fired him for a second time, this time for good. What happened next defied logic and good taste and stands out as one of the most unforgettable moments in the history of professional wrestling. The Raven once again took to the SCW airwaves, ranting about how Ace could never fire him and that nobody holds control over him. To the shock of the SCW audience, the Raven then took the same gun he held to the head of "Sean Gunn" and committed suicide, live on national television. Today, the Raven is alive and well. What did happen? Are we supposed to believe the Raven when he says that he was merely killing off his SCW character, like a television show would? Or is the Raven really a new Raven? Perhaps Raven II was the real Raven? It hurts the head to think about it, but what is known is that it stands as the only moment in wrestling history that may have never happened to begin with.

2 Raven defeats Steve Augustine at No Turning Back 1998
After being fired by James Ace and the SCW for the first time, a moment that didn't make our list, Raven set his sights on Steve Augustine in the NOWF and unleashed his frustrations on him. Although it is unsure as to why Augustine was used as a martyr for the Raven's SCW frustrations, Raven made him just that and planned a diabolical scheme to get the Intercontinental title from around Augustine's waist. During their match at No Turning Back, it appeared that the Raven had enlisted the help of Taz, the man whom the Raven had turned on months prior, much to the shock of the NOWF audience. The Raven won the Intercontinental Championship that night with Taz's help, which only enraged Augustine. However, as it turned out, when Augustine fought Taz the next week, it wasn't Taz at all -- a Taz imposter, named The Tasmaniac, had fooled us all. The Tasmaniac soon faded away, but the job had been done. Augustine had been embarrassed, and his title had been taken.

1 "The Blood Feud"
Raven. And Taz. It's the last dream match of the PWF. It's the one match that even the wrestlers of the PWF would pay to see. To name one moment in their feud would be an injustice. Who could forget California Chaos 1997, when Taz no-showed the pay-per-view and his highly anticipated match with the Raven? Or when the Raven debuted his new valet, Taz's old girlfriend Alicia Rae, before a Last Man Standing match on PWF Wargames in June of 2006? Or Taz turning on the Raven on Wargames in April of 2006? Or what about the last match in the NOWF's history, when the Raven finally pinned Taz and joined Johnny Asterix in forming the TRUE Monopoly? The moment the fans most remember and cherish, however, is the first time the two ever stepped into the ring for a singles match -- at the NOWF's Final Battleground 1998 in a Ladder match for the Raven's North American Championship. It would be Taz who would survive the match, through the interference of the Perfect Team and Andy Lutzky, but it would be that instance where the Raven and Taz stood toe-to-toe in the middle of the ring for the very first time with the eyes of the entire wrestling world on them that would last forever. The Raven has claimed to have won the feud, even going as far as to proclaim it on PWF television, but if you ask me, this "Blood Feud" will never end.

That's the list. If anybody has any thoughts on the list or has any moments that I may have missed, please feel free to e-mail me at tedbutterknife@yahoo.com. I assure you the e-mail address is real, and all comments will be answered by yours truly. Thank you for taking the time to read this, as it is my first-ever article for ThePWF.com. I hope to be back soon with another article, but until then, this is Ted Butterknife saying "keep your butter warm and your bread buttered."
