Remember the Titans
Nov. 1, 2009
For as long as SCW and the NOWF were at war with each other in the late-'90s,
one would believe that the two owners of the companies -- very vocal, very intimidating men that did not see eye-to-eye -- would've found their way into the ring and tried to physically settle their differences. Johnny Asterix had, on occasion, stepped into the
squared-circle, and James Ace was a dominant force in SCW, winning a total of nine
World Championships during his time as an SCW wrestler. Still, even with the verbal jabs thrown at each other across the airwaves, a match was never signed to settle the score.
That is all about to change at WrestleFest V, where the former titans of the wrestling industry finally meet in the ring, squaring off on the biggest stage of the year -- maybe even the biggest stage in wrestling history.
The match can be credited as the idea of Ace. He was an active part of the PWF for the past couple of years, but an injury suffered at
Aggression earlier this year put him on the sidelines, possibly for good
due to the severity of it. But on the Oct. 13 edition of Wargames, Ace made an unexpected return to the ring. With
WrestleFest V looming, he stated that none of this would even be happening if it weren't for
his SCW. That being said, he issued a challenge to a man he seemed to hold on the same level of importance, someone he had never faced, and someone that could give him a match worthy of a show like
WrestleFest V ... and the challenge was issued to Johnny Asterix. He gave Asterix one week to "man up" and take him up on the offer.
The challenge was left open and Asterix would show up the next week, coming down to the ring in similar fashion and talking with the crowd about the glories of yesteryear. After explaining to the crowd that he wasn't the man he was
10 years ago, he refused to give Ace the opportunity to pad his resume and scolded him for waiting as long as he did to challenge him. However, during Asterix's angry tirade, he seemed to realize this might be one last shot to humiliate Ace, so he
changed course and accepted the challenge; the match was set.
There would be a face-to-face meeting of the minds, just one week before
WrestleFest, but not much was said during the encounter. Ace was being interviewed by Gene Okerlund
about the match when Asterix walked up, looking far more confident than Ace would've expected. Ace told Asterix to make sure he brought everything he had because he wanted to "tear the roof off" of the Scottrade
Center and steal the show. Asterix couldn't help but agree, but he warned Ace to be careful, because he would never come into this match without what he called
a "game plan."
Ace was ridiculed for never having much success outside of SCW
earlier in his career, and he blames Asterix for preventing him that right in
the NOWF, something Ace had allowed his rival's competitors to do in SCW. Ace has gone on record
saying that he feels Asterix was "scared to death" to accept such a challenge a
decade ago, afraid to see Ace look superior over any NOWF superstar. Asterix has
since disputed many of these and similar allegations made by Ace. James Ace has gone a long way to disprove the initial questions about him from a
decade ago. He has gone on to win three separate championships in the PWF,
including the Federation Championship.
In a match that will be the final SCW/NOWF showdown,
a match that will mark the end of a 12-year war, both men can finally end something that never truly had a resolution so long ago. At
WrestleFest V, these men will get a final chance to prove the other wrong
and carry the flag for their creations, creations that laid the foundation for
the Professional Wrestling Federation and professional wrestling in general.
