A Battle for Dominance
Oct. 29, 2009

A year is a long time. 365 days. 12 months. 10 federal holidays. Four seasons.

And it's also the period of time Kimona Wanalaya likes to hold onto a championship.

The first time Kimona won the Women's Championship in 2005, she held onto it for 364 days, just a day short of the year-mark. With her third reign in 2007, she not only reached that mark but smashed it, holding the title for an astounding 559 days. With accomplishments like these, it's no wonder that many have called (and are still calling) Kimona the greatest Women's Champion, and wrestler for that matter, of all-time.

And then came Maryse.

Maryse debuted in the Professional Wrestling Federation in March of 2008, chosen by Del Wilkes to be his beautiful, new valet during a series of auditions. Before long, she found herself in the middle of a plethora of Divas fighting it out for in-ring supremacy in the PWF. That was easier said than done with Kimona Wanalaya still around, and the title was practically locked-up until Kimona parted ways with the Federation in April of 2009. The day that happened, everything changed in the Women's Division, and the door was open for someone else to dominate ... which is exactly what Maryse did. After a nasty feud with Francine (something Kimona also went through during her career), Maryse won the championship by being the Sole Survivor of a Recoil match featuring several PWF Divas and has held the title since, amassing a very impressive five-month reign -- the longest any woman has achieved since the days of Kimona.

Which is a part of the reason this match is happening at WrestleFest V. Maryse has gone on record as saying that she wants to truly find out who the most dominant woman in PWF history is, and with a show like WrestleFest coming up -- one that is billed to be the biggest in professional wrestling history -- there could be no better place to settle the debate. Maryse, in her time as champion, has thwarted numerous challenges from the Triple Threat and also defeated nearly every woman the PWF has to offer. All that considered, she wants to know if she can defeat the greatest challenge of them all: Kimona. All that needed to happen was for the former three-time Women's Champion to accept, and this past Monday on Wargames, word came down from PWF president Eric Bischoff that she did.

As telling as the upcoming bout might be about who the most dominant Diva to ever grace a PWF ring is, it is not the first time these two have met. It all started at Road To Perdition 2008 and WrestleFest IV, when Maryse found herself getting her first chances at winning the gold. These matches, though, consisted of multiple Divas and weren't one-on-one opportunities. A couple of months later in January of this year, Maryse would finally get a couple of singles matches against Kimona with the championship on-the-line but could only come close to defeating Kimona.

Perhaps Maryse wasn't quite ready to take on the challenge of someone as dominant as Kimona at the time. It could be argued that Maryse was simply far too inexperienced to best Kimona, something that certainly couldn't be argued now, as she is now a successful champion. Maryse is also the only woman to ever hold one-half of the World Tag Team Championship. She will surely go down as one of the most dominant women to ever hold the Women's Championship with what's she's already accomplished, but until she can defeat Kimona in the ring, there will always be a question as to whether or not she can surpass what Kimona has done.

And that's why Maryse versus Kimona is a necessary match at WrestleFest V. If Maryse wins, she can take a step towards proving she is in Kimona's league. If Kimona wins, she solidifies her place in the industry as the greatest female wrestler to ever step foot into a ring.
